Garden birds in the UK
Identify thirty familiar, specialist and winter-visiting UK garden birds, with practical advice on natural food, safe feeding and suitable habitat.
What is visiting your garden, and what would actually help it? These species guides bring identification, natural behaviour and sensible feeding advice together. Start with the bird you have seen, then follow the links to a food, feeder or nest-box guide only when that equipment fits.
Feeding advice changed in 2026. Current RSPB and BTO guidance advises offering supplementary seed and peanuts from November to April, then pausing them from May to October. Natural seedheads and insect-rich habitat remain valuable through the year. Keep water fresh and any feeding point clean, especially when finches gather.
For a difficult identification, compare several field marks and a trusted RSPB species account before deciding what you saw.

Seen a bird you cannot place?
Start with its bill, head and wing markings, then watch how it moves. Feeding behaviour is useful context, but a bird taking a particular food is not proof of its identity.
