What does “without a subscription” actually mean?
A bird-feeder camera can work without a paid subscription yet still depend on an app and cloud account. Those are different claims. Birdfy's current membership explanation describes a Free level with 30-day retention for automatic “Moment” clips, clips up to 20 seconds, 5GB of Collection storage and 10 AI bird identifications per day. Limits and plan names can change; read the live terms before you order.
None of that makes the camera an offline recorder. Many Birdfy Feeder 1-family devices do not offer consumer microSD playback even where a card slot is visible. If local, account-independent recording is your priority, look at a conventional wildlife camera instead—but it will not deliver the same close-up feeder angle or remote live view.

The table describes Birdfy's published account-level terms, not a promise that every third-party listing includes a lifetime service. If the retailer card says “lifetime AI”, save a copy of the precise offer and confirm it with Birdfy before relying on it. Newer devices and older AI-labelled variants are not interchangeable.
SOLIOM is different: its current support article says basic bird clips remain available on a short rolling free cloud history, but bird-name AI requires a subscription after a one-month trial. Do not apply the Birdfy table to a SOLIOM purchase or assume the Amazon listing's trial wording promises a permanent long retention period.
Which camera makes sense?
Birdfy 2K: established app-led choice
The 2K feeder is the more established integrated option in our catalogue. It records short visits and offers remote viewing through the Birdfy app. Choose it if you value a familiar system and are content to manage saved clips in the app. Its 2K label is a seller specification; it does not make poor light or a weak network disappear. Check whether the selected Amazon variant includes any AI benefit beyond the current free level.
Birdfy blue solar feeder: solar-assisted alternative
The blue solar model combines the familiar Birdfy app with solar-assisted charging. It may be attractive if the current bundle costs less overall than the 2K version, but do not assume its AI package is identical. The free membership baseline is useful, while any legacy lifetime entitlement must be checked against the exact listing and registration process.
SOLIOM BF02: basic viewing without ongoing AI
The BF02 adds a different app and solar-panel arrangement. It is relevant here because SOLIOM says the feeder can still provide short rolling clips after its trial without paying monthly. Its trade-off is clear: if automatic bird names are important, you should budget for the post-trial AI plan. Check current app and storage terms at checkout; do not confuse a free trial with a permanent feature. Its seller also mentions memory-card use, but confirm card support for the exact BF02 offer before treating it as an offline recorder.

Avoid a subscription surprise
Before checkout, identify the brand's free tier, video retention, AI allowance, number of supported devices and whether clips can be exported. After setup, check the app's membership screen before a free trial expires. Turn off any auto-renewal you do not want. These simple checks are more useful than assuming “no monthly fee” means every feature is permanent.
Keep feeding hygiene separate from account features. Empty damp food, clean food-contact parts and follow current RSPB feeding guidance. If you stop using the camera app, the physical feeder still needs care.
